You haven't told us the make / model of genset your FIL has but it seems to me the best recommendation is to follow the instructions provided in the owner's manual for that particular genset. ;) That said, these instructions are usually in reference to long term storage so the simpler solution I've always used is to just leave gas in it and run the genset at least once a month for awhile, preferably with a load on it, and have never had any issues with either of the two Honda EU2000i gensets I've owned. :)
