Generator Question

Kind of a beginner question - my friends and I have rented a 1974 Coachman Cadet to use during a music festival, and it's my job to secure the generator, as the owner of the camper doesn't have one. Would renting a regular 3000w generator from Lowe's (or a similar place) be okay? Our priorities are air conditioning in the late morning, refrigeration, and occasional phone charging. We rented a camper last year, a newer model, and they insisted that we needed an inverter-type generator and I had a heck of time finding one to rent in our area.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • I'd rent an inverter generator if possible. Some of the cheap, no-name models might have very dirty power, especially when a load like the A/C comes on and off, and this can do damage to items in the RV.

If I had to buy a loud open-framed model, I'd spend the $450 for a Champion 4000 watt model at the minimum. Champion has very good customer support.
  • Make sure you get one that has a outlet that provides 30a @ 120v or you may have problems running the AC.
  • The festival separates campers and RVs from the other attendees, specifically because of the noise. Thanks for the heads up!
  • I suppose it would be ok at a festival - those kinds of gens are really loud. In a regular campground it would not be welcome.

I recall a group of 20 somethings who rented a C for the Indio festival and pulled into my FH campground with the onboard generator running. Hours later I had to go tell them it will still running and they needed to plug in. They had no clue.
