Generator quits after 2 min!

Could use some help as I'm stumped now. I have an Onan Marquis 5500 model# HGJAB-901D
First, the genset wouldn't run and I figured out it was the fuel pump- replaced that. I've tried cleaning it out with Seafoam and carb cleaner. All while connected. I've heard these carbs are non serviceable?
I've got the generator to run, but it only runs for 2 mins then cuts off. Sometimes I can get it to run longer but it starts hunting off and on for a while before ultimately cutting off. Any ideas?

Thanks

    Clogged air filter?

Air filter is new as is oil filter . Changed when I installed new fuel pump

Oil is good, altitude is good. Just ran it without the fuel cap- it hiccuped at about 2 min then ran fine. Went to put a load on it-run A/C and it dies. It can't handle a load.

Never had an issue with this generator until now it sat for about 4 months without running. I'm thinking carb issue but not understanding why it would hunt and die when putting a load on it?:?

Because you do NOT understand the APU carb system:B. When you apply a load, you have to increase the fuel supply thru those jet holes. If any of those holes are clogged or restricted you will get hunting/surging and what you are experiancing. Doug

Check the rubber fuel line from the fuel pump to the tank, maybe split somewhere. Try running with the fuel filler cap loose.

New rubber fuel line from pump to carb- when I installed new pump

I'll try running with fuel cap off

The line from the tank to the pump

  • Check oil level, and if it has one, the altitude switch on it.
  • If the Carb orifice jets are clogged (there are 16 very small holes in the jet) it is almost impossible for any carb cleaner to completely clean them out. Yes, there are NO parts available for Onan carbs in the past 20 years due to CAB restrictions. BUT, you can take them apart and remove the jet and manually clean out the orifice holes. It is rare for you to destroy the gasket or seals in the carb. You may have to cut the plastic cover plug adjuster off the bottom bowl adjuster to unscrew the carb fuel bowl. You can clean the jet without removing the complete carb. Once the bowl is removed you unscrew the jet from the carb. Doug
