It sounds to me like the generator happens to have its two sockets wired with the (normally floating) two output wires connected inconsistently; what is the hot wire on one socket is the neutral on the other, and vice-versa. With a floating output, this is not incorrect; they are interchangeable. When you put in a bonding plug, you're making it so they are no longer interchangeable. It is arguably a bit sloppy to have them wired reversed from each other.
The chances of an inverter generator putting out an incorrect voltage are sufficiently slim that I would not bother with an EMS sort of device unless it were hardwired. The voltage regulation is an inherent part of the inverter circuit, since it's synthesizing the output waveform in its entirety and is not directly related to the field current on the generator head proper.
