Following up on Mr Wiz's idea about a different gen, you could go to a rental place where they rent out Honda gens, eg, and see if they will let you try your SG and plug with a Honda and one of their other tools as a load in their shop. They are always running demos for people.
You would then at least know if your SG and plug work as advertised before finding out what is different about your gen.
