Generator won't turnover from inside motorhome

I have a 1998 Winnebago with a 4000 watt Onan generator. Generator won't turnover from inside motor home. Starts fine using switch on the generator. Once started, the inside off switch works fine. An...

The J8/P8 connector plug is inside the generator housing. It is very close to the main battery cable and the wires exit the generator set through the same hole as the main positive battery cable.
Earlier models had the plug at the rear left corner of the generator set next to the fuel line.
