I suspect the cabinet you are putting it in is a Farady cage (it does not let signals in) Several options present themselves but alas I would need eyes on to be specific.
One is to mount the thing on drawer slides so you can simply pull it out of the cabinet to use it.
Another is to rig an external antenna (Way easier to do than it sounds, epically on FM. The big thing is when you moved the radio you moved the antennas.
