Genny UH-OH!

Our RV forgot it was housetrained!
do you think this is just a gasket that needs replacing?
Maybe that oval thing with the screw each end.
we assume we will have to replenish the oil.
anything else?
ONAN 4KY-FA/26100K (also in one of the pics)
on a 2006 sunova 29R
the carb was drained over a year ago and the RV has been happily enjoying its rest in the shed for over a year.

thanks everyone

  • Thanks
So it looks like the plug is leaking?
The genny was serviced before the last 3500 mile trip.
And the mh has been parked for a year, this the first sign of any problem.

No, Sir. The little plate is access TO the plug. Plug requires some kind of bit/socket (forget just which) and has a gasket. Plug itself screws into the oil sump of the motor portion of the generator. It traces back to the oil filler where the yellow filler cap is.
  • See if the drain plug is tight.
Can you see one in the picture. i suspect that oval plate IS the drain plug!
i assume (hope?) there is a gasket behind it.
    thanks guys
  • Take off the cover plate on the bottom. You'll need a special torx socket to get the cover plate off. I suggest you replace the 2 cover plate screws with cap screws and dump the torx machine screws. See if the drain plug is tight. Check the oil level and make sure the O-ring is on the dipstick. Onan 4K gennys are known to mark their spot if overfull or the dipstick is loose. There are several gaskets on the head and elsewhere that can leak. Spray some brake clean on the engine and inside the genny cover to see if you can find where the oil is coming from. Not to worry just yet.

  • The oval thing with the screw each end was a cover for the oil drain plug on my Winnebago... Onan genny. Maybe oil drain plug loosened up? Is oil now empty or is it by some chance overfilled?

On my truck, the dealer put oil in twice (??) and way overfilled it and it
started leaking out from that cover with the screws in it. That is how I found out it was overfilled. I checked the dipstick and wow... back to dealer.
