Going out on a limb here... drop spare tire, add genset?

First, this is pure armchair speculation on my part. On a one ton diesel pickup, assuming one can find a space for the spare tire, would it be feasible to use that space (15 inches is the height the genset needs) to mount a diesel generator like the Powertech PT-3SV2, using the truck's fuel tank as the diesel source. This generator is only 3000 watts, but that is definitely enough to power most items on a 30 amp trailer, and since a truck has a fairly large fuel tank, the run time would definitely be useful.

Again, this is just a wild idea that isn't well thought out, but with a truck camper, it would allow for prolonged boondocking in the Texas heat, without having to run the vehicle's engine for hours on end.

  • Sounds like it would fit.

How about a front hitch on the truck, then using a pintel hitch mount, you can bolt the spare tire to that.

You probably will also need to add a tap of some sort to the fuel tank. Most motorhomes come with this option, but it would be rare on a F-250. Some F-550's would have the second fuel port, used in auxiliary equipment installed on certain trucks.
