Guidance for full time RVing in a mild winter

Hey everyone! Next year it looks like I will be moving into my travel trailer full time since I am receiving orders to North Carolina and my wife will be staying behind in VA. I know the winters aren't exceptionally harsh in NC, but I'm looking for some tips on making my winter months trouble free. I have already converted my water heater to run on electric and utilize an electric space heater vice running the furnace. My site will have full sewer, electric, and water. All of my water lines are run inside the unit, but all three tanks are exposed to the cold. I was thinking heating pads for the grey and black tanks, a no-freeze hose for my city water connection and a heating pad on the dump valve should keep everything moving nicely. Any guidance from all of you experienced folks would be awesome. Thanks!

  • Hi,

If the unit won't need to be moved add skirting and an electric heater under it. Make sure to get one with a mechanical thermostat rather than a fancy one. In this one instance the cheaper the cost for the heater the better.
  • In possible freezing weather we fill our fresh water tank and use the water pump. If the black and grey tank are at least 1/4 or more full it shouldn't freeze unless the temps go way way down. Some folks also leave the grey tank open and run the water at a very slow trickle, this keeps the water line from freezing. Do a search on this topic and you should get many tips.
