I second that statement! I have very little trust in these sound measurements. Besides needing to have calibrated equipment, the sound measurement depends on the orientation of the generator with respect to the meter and the surrounding environment. Wouldn't surprise me if atmospheric conditions play a part. The only way I'll believe comparative measurements are if the generators being compared are measured in the same place, same time, same environment, same load, and same meter with the same operator. Even with that, some sounds are just more annoying than others and a generator that measures as being louder could be the friendlier one, noise-wise. I'll believe a no-instrument side-by-side opinion more than published specs. Some of these generators are advertised as "silent". What a joke!
