Just rebuilt 3 Honda quads for a customer. One needed a top end and a new head. The other 2 were minor stuff, new carbs and ignition modules, final drives changed, oil filters and fresh oil. I like working on them, pretty simple machines.
Honda quads in general have a couple issues that can cause motor issues. One, they have no fuel filtration so I always add inline fuel filters and two, they use an oil temperature sensor on the bottom side of the case that actuates the fan that sits behind the oil cooler and that switch has a tendency to stick. When it does, the fan becomes inoperative, the engine overheats and either burns the valves or cracks the head. Real common issue. Another less common issue is a sticky compression release cam. Usually they stick because the owner neglected to change the oil.
I have a Foreman 400 with less than 1000 miles on it as my personal quad. I bypassed the temp switch and installed a manual on-off toggle. Has a winch and the 4wd disconnect that is no longer available. Nice machine. Bought it used in 2000. Plan on keeping it forever. Gets a steady diet of 5-40 Rotella and has a stainless steel, cleanable oil filter.
