Small engines have common problem that open fuel will flood carburetor, what will eventually gunk it.
I learned long time ago to shut off fuel and run carburetors dry before any storage. Even 5l inboard on my boat improved with added valve dramatically.
My Honda 3000 is about 10 years old, so are my Honda lawnmowers.
Observing the shut down procedure, when I need to restart any of them, I open fuel, wait couple of minutes for it to fill up carburetor and seldom have to do 2nd pull. Even when fuel in generator is 2 years old.
