Has anyone insulated to cut down on furnace noise?

I know I've heard of people doing this before. There is 3/8" to 5/8" of space above it and it's very open on the sides. What are the dangers of doing this? What kind of material would you use and wha...

Nothing should be touching furnace case.

Air return is via the openings in case

Install a false wall separating furnace from basement compartment
Sound proof the wall

BUT you will still HEAR the blower/burner when running due to outside vent/exhaust
