Has anyone insulated to cut down on furnace noise?

I know I've heard of people doing this before. There is 3/8" to 5/8" of space above it and it's very open on the sides. What are the dangers of doing this? What kind of material would you use and wha...

Maybe when I hear "soundproofing" and a heat source in the same place, I think of these images. Maybe it is because 100 people died. Just use caution with what you use.
