Has anyone insulated to cut down on furnace noise?

I know I've heard of people doing this before. There is 3/8" to 5/8" of space above it and it's very open on the sides. What are the dangers of doing this? What kind of material would you use and wha...

Yes - I have used sound deadening material around my furnace - not touching it, but applied to surrounding cabinetry. It made a huge difference! I had taken the furnace out to replace the motor, so I had lots of room to work.

I got this stuff - with heat reflecting covering on one side and adhesive on the other. I got the heat reflecting because the furnace is right under the fridge.
