Has anyone insulated to cut down on furnace noise?

I know I've heard of people doing this before. There is 3/8" to 5/8" of space above it and it's very open on the sides. What are the dangers of doing this? What kind of material would you use and wha...

At what point and from where do I remove the furnace tube that heads out of the furnace to the rest of the rig. Do I have to do that from inside the basement? Or do I pull out the furnace a bit and remove it from the outside of the rig.
