Alternative solution - tried by many, with positive results.
1) Pull it out. Completely, with the piece of duct. Sell it to scrap yard or to somebody for parts.
2) Cover the hole in the wall with 1/2" plywood from inside.
3) Get a decent propane heater and install in on the wall where you want it. Noise problem solved.
