Has anyone insulated to cut down on furnace noise?

I know I've heard of people doing this before. There is 3/8" to 5/8" of space above it and it's very open on the sides. What are the dangers of doing this? What kind of material would you use and wha...

Removing the furnace now. Got the gas fitting apart but the wiring is all over. Looks like I need to disconnect all the wiring coming from the left that was tucked down in the void. The rest looks way too complicated. Maybe I'll replace with butt connectors for the next time I have to do this. :/

Please correct me if I'm wrong about this. I'm "going in" in 15 min....thanks....
