Has anyone insulated to cut down on furnace noise?

I know I've heard of people doing this before. There is 3/8" to 5/8" of space above it and it's very open on the sides. What are the dangers of doing this? What kind of material would you use and wha...

Also, which prong of the sail switch does the red wire go on? I've seen it both ways on the same model of furnace in photos. That's the one photo I didn't take. It was so hard to get the parts out that by the time I was able I was just disconnecting without thinking.
