NO! All heat producing appliances have minimum clearance requirements. Look up the specs for your specific furnace.
Thanks. To all who responded. Got it sorted. The SF-35 needs 55 sq. inches for intake. It actually states that it doesn't need any clearance on 5 of its 6 sides (with the exception of the air intake vents I'm sure) but I'll be leaving a few inches just to be on the safe side, and a lot of space open to the basement in the back. I'll also be recording the sound from the both inside and outside the rig before and after and will post links in case anyone is interested.
I will be posting instructions for removing this furnace, for whoever might need it in the future, in a couple of days. It was an adventure.
Running great now and the squeal is gone.
