I upgraded from a DTV HR24 to HR44 receiver and now have significantly less reboots due to AC power change over.
Pros: 3 minute reboot so much less interruption when it does reboot. Much faster menu/remote operations. 5 channel recording which provides more playback options when not on the satellites. High quality HD, TV is 1080 at home and 720 in the rig which is detected by the receiver via HDMI and automatically adjusts the receiver output. Can easily add mini Genie receivers. RF remote so the receiver is mounted vertically in the back of a cabinet.
Cons: SWM only which is not a con for me. High power consumption - have to keep that disk spinning: 240W + 72W for SWM, power off was slightly less. DTV said they use higher quality coax, compression connectors and barrel connectors due the much higher bandwidth required ie 5 HD channels at once on the coax. Lower quality coax may be OK especially for shorter distances so the HR44 may work in a rig with existing coax. Installation of multiple Genie receivers (bedroom/outside) should be easier since a coax is the only connection.
For a period of time I had both the HR24 and HR44 connected. I was quite surprised that the HR24 acted like a mini Genie in that I could watch all of the recorded programs on the HR44. I’ve discontinued the HR24 as we have no real need for a mini Genie and second TV.
