HD DVR dedicated inverter

I've installed a dedicated inverter for the HD DVR.

I had a spare 2kw (12v) Xantrex, which, amazingly, fired up and worked - with only #10 wires feeding it. There was a 12v socket in the cabinet, but I pulled those wires and put new connectors on them. The receiver draws only 50w, so we're good there. The voltage sits at about 12.2 as shown on the inverter front panel. Normal coach voltage is 12.5. I let it run for quite some time, and nothing's getting hot, so I guess that's good. I thought perhaps the small wires wouldn't even be enough to start the inverter itself, but, no problemo. I've ordered a 350w Samlex to be a permanent install. The 2kw unit is just too big for the cabinet.

That darn receiver will go through an entire boot up of 10 minutes or more for even the slightest power outage.

  • When my Xantrex died I replaced it with a pure sine wave one from Magnum (MS2812). The Xantrex often caused the DirecTV DVR to reboot; the Magnum doesn't.
  • quite a few members Here, used an inverter for the "Entertainment" systems
the voltage is Always controlled and constant, shore power glitches, or generator lags, don't affect the inverter

a Few have gone as far as to install a UPS system to power the TV etc..
  • I feel your pain on some of these issues. I have a Prosine 2.0 purchased for the prior RV, and there's no good space to put it in the current small motorhome. I've used both Direct and Dish at home. The Direct DVR was so darn slow and unresponsive that I "wanted to pull my hair out". The Dish DVR is so darn buggy that I want to "pull my hair out". Either way, sat DVR's are bad for one's hair. The reboot on power glitch is just another aspect of poor design.

That's why you need an inverter/charger that will switch from normal power to battery without interrupting power to the DVR, or one that is only powered by the batteries. DVR's will as you say, "reboot in a heartbeat".
