Some units operate the furnace in addition to the overhead unit, when first turned on, to reduce the time it takes to achieve the set temperature. Your furnace or thermostat may have taken a hit from the high voltage.

You may have a surge protector that just protects from extreme voltage. Think nearby lightening strikes.
