JMO but I wouldn't be "negotiating" in the slightest, ALL costs for total repair including the cost of a new EMS should be covered by this "electrician" whether he's a "nice guy" or not. And when you do replace that surge protector make sure it's one that will protect against these types of errors ... I run a
Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C and would highly recommend this series of EMS which are offered in both 30 amp and 50 amp configurations.
