There are red 20ma 2.7 v devices that have been running continuously on the Kelley II, for 33 years. They are "Power Available To Bilge Pumps" indicators. 290,000 hours.
An IR thermometer played from 6" right on the lit LED panel will render a really good approximation of interior junction temperature. The RISE in amperage between an ambient temperature first-lit LED and another reading taken when the heat sink is fully saturated will reveal an astonishingly accurate decision as to whether the heatsink needs help.
