We had a tarp on there before, but wherever it makes contact, water just wicks right through it, that's why I was thinking of building sort of a frame to put it on.... With the luck we've had, I don't want to bank on a drier, snowy winter....
Then you are using the WRONG type of TARP.... Sounds like an old canvas style.?? Try a newer version, a heavy duty from any paint store, or Home Depot/Lowes..
like this - tarp at Home Depot
It's the standard woven plastic type, not canvas. We had HEAVY rains this year, and though I tried to prop up around the AC and vents with plywood pieces and tied with bungee, there was still a couple areas that pooled up heavily, and that's where it came in. It also didn't help that my metal roof was covered in tiny holes (now discovered after tearing from the inside....) We temporarily glopped the caulk sealant stuff in all the holes, but as soon as we pressure wash to seal, those will all pop out, I'm sure.
I like the idea of the noodles, then plastic, then tarp. I have a brand new, heavier duty tarp that will go way down the sides, and a giant roll of bungee. my biggest concern was the contact then pooling, as just described, due to snow melt and the like. Some winters we get minimal snow, some we get just dumped on, feet after feet. Hoping for a non-dumping winter (though the skier in me disagrees, haha!).
