HELP!...What can I do to keep fridge cold and food safe?

I have posted a couple of threads on the subject on how to improve cooling.

However, I am going on a week long trip next week into some HOT weather (100F PLUS) and need to keep food at a safe level.

My fridge temps at home today are 43F with ambient temps at 100F and fridge side in shade (awning up). b Feezer is cold and makes ice, but cubes are not made too fast (20 cubes in past 48hrs); this is my first experience with an ice maker.

What can I do as a quick fix for my next trip to keep my food at 40F or below?

Ice chests for ALL food?
Eat out everyday (not practical)?
what else?

Thanks

  • I also carry a large cooler and put frozen gallons of Iced tea in it, I have never needed to use it but the ice cold tea never goes to waste..
    The first thing I do to the reefer in a new unit is install small fans to remove the excess heat..
  • Keep the fridge FULL - this will act like a cold reservoir
    I keep 3 or 4 Quart bottles in the freezer and let them freeze;
    Every 12 hours, take a bottle out of the freezer and move it to the "fridge"
    which keep the temps reasonable.
    When you run out of bottles - buy a bag of ice and repeat......

    I have gone several days "of the grid" doing it this way and keeping the food
    reasonably cool.
