The pendant is typically something you'd mount someplace at least somewhat accessible and visible. It serves two purposes: it tells you what mode the converter is in, and it lets you force it into some other mode should you have a need to do so. Most of the time it does okay on its own figuring out a reasonable mode, but there can be occasions where it's handy to be able to force your will on it—either to place it in boost mode to charge the battery as quickly as possible, even if it doesn't want to do so, or to throttle it down if AC power is in very limited supply. You might not want it immediately visible from your sleeping area(s) as the blinking light can be a bit annoying at nighttime.
