If you use a trickle charger to charge your batteries you will likely need to run the generator MOST of the time to keep up with electricity use. Really can't answer what is best for you without knowing what kind of converter/charger you have. A stand alone charger is always a possibility but they can have some problems also. SOME will read the battery state of charge and if the converter is putting anything into the batteries it will read the battery as in a higher state of charge and SOMETIMES will simply think they don't need charging and shut down. Solution is to remove the negative lead and charge the battery without being connected to the converter charger.
