Might also observe voltage at the controller output/battery posts for the same test times and see if there is the same degree of spiking at the battery as at the inverter input.

I do actually have a voltage monitor in the exact location you're describing. but I haven't watched it during the spikes. I'll look into that when I troubleshoot again. I can confirm that it reads what I expect it to during normal charging and during inverter use.
