No it is not upside down. The filter can only be placed one way in cover as there are tabs and grooves that hold it in place.
The cover was taken off by inserting a flat screwdriver into slots that can be seen where gap is. Once this was "popped" it just slid back and off. There are grooves or channels that the curved part of the cover slid into to hold it flush against the cover. I just can't seem to "pop" it back into position.
