For most battery types The recommendd peak charging current (Recommended by Xantrex) is 30 percent of the 20 hour amp hour rating.
So if you have say 3 group 29's at 105 AH each, (315 total) the peak (Maximum) Charging current should be no more than 94.5 amps.
Trojan, however, recommends a much slower charge rate (like 10%) and Lifeline, on their AGM's a much higher one.. ONLY LIFELINE.
The alternator can limit it's total output, However it has no control over how much goes to the batteries as opposed to headlights, HEVAC, and so on.
