They used to make what is called a Boiler hole plug. It is metal with a rubber gasket on the outside. It was used for patching a small hole in a boiler. You drilled a hole where the leak is, then insert the spring loaded plug, then tighten it.
Also they used to make a rubber drain plug for a car oil pan when the threads get stripped out. Works on a similar principle, insert plug in hole, then as you tighten plug it expands inside and seals hole. If you could get one of these plugs, at least you would not have to figure out how to patch hole.
Note that car plug would never rust, but boiler plug could possibly rust, but that probably would be years away.
Would have to install on a flat surface thought not a corner.
