I changed out my old Honeywell CT87 with the anticipator thermostat. I replaced it with an new Honeywell digital unit so we could add central AC later. The problem is that it now overshoots the set...

Read the manual. Most "intelligent" thermostats say that they require 8 to 10 days to learn the characteristics of a heating/cooling system and will adjust the on/off cycles accordingly.
For now I just put the antique back on. :)
