That should work. Surge capacity of 5000 watts and run capacity at 4000 watts should keep two ac's running if they don't try to start at the same time.
Where did you find the banana plugs that are shielded like the ones from Honda? What are the black components the black wires go into on each side if the interior of the box?
Polarity of the wires doesn't matter. If you want to build your own box you can buy these, cut the cables in half and wire your own box.
