How do you prepare your generator for storage for more than 3 months?

I had lot of carbureted engines and running carburetor dry was always all the preparation I needed.
My Honda 3000 inverter generator runs on 3 years old gas just fine after such preparation.
On my boat with 5 l Mercruiser (?) I had to add shut off valve as it was not equipped. Than it took few turns to prime the carburetor bowl before the engine would start, but that sure beat cleaning gummed carburetor I had to do in 1st year of ownership
