The low surge rating is demonstrated by not being able to run an A/C ..... as compared to a 10 year old no-name knockoff of a very similar nominal capacity. The surge capacity required to start an A/C is well above 2kw, maybe double or more depending on the A/C unit.
Honda makes no claim that their EU2000i is in any way suitable for successfully starting and running a 13,500 BTU roof mount A/C so it's hypocritical to complain. :R True - given certain requirements are met many (myself included) have proven it is possible, the catch being success is not guaranteed as so many variables are involved. I've been able to start and run a variety of 13.5K A/C units with either EU2000i I've owned BUT in order to successfully do so I made a number of changes - switched the dino oil to Mobil 1 synth, equipped the A/C in question with a Supco SPP6 hard start cap, treated the premium non-ethanol gas with SeaFoam, and even wired up the digital thermostat in our previous Spree so I could start the A/C compressor first then turn on the fan. Here in S Ontario where we're near sea level either EU would start any of my A/C units provided ambient outside temps were no higher than the mid 80s ... BUT as temps and/or elevation rose success became less and less. How one could complain a genset won't always handle a task for which the manufacturer makes clear it's not suitable, claiming it suffers from inadequate surge capability is absurd. :S
