hooking up Big Red Campfire

That unit has an adjustable regulator on it which means it probably needs more than 11" wc your going to get from your "grill" connection. I could find the spec's for it. It would probably burn but you will not have any flame adjustment or if its high pressure unit you will have a lazy sooty very small yellow flame.

Okay GASMAN here is your chance to educate us all. If I hook the BRC up to my RV's LP system using the connection provided by the RV manufacturer would it work?

The hook in my question is, I didn't say where the connector is in relationship to the main house system regulator. Mine is between the tank shutoff valve and the regulator.

If the BRC will run off a standard LP cylinder, why wouldn't it run off my LP Tank?

Yes in your case it will work because it is on the "high" pressure side of the regulator. You will have to use the appliance as it comes out of the box.

On most rigs the factory installed quick disconnect is after the regulator (low pressure) any appliance that uses a disposable type bottle (lantern, big buddy heater,poratble "colemane" type cook stove)
uses high pressure gas and wouldnt work generally the regulator is the control knob.
The BRC uses an adjustable type regulator so I assume it requires high pressure and the flame height/volume is done by varying the pressure. I couldnt find the pressure spec's online. Hope this helps

Ok, You are right. In my case the regulator is at tanks I think, so I guess it would be low pressure going to the gas connection?

Was wondering about this because I use the small tanks on my grill and it works fine. This is the same grill that is supposed to work off the TT hookup. So how can the grill work off both and not the BRC?

Not arguing the point, just don't understand all I know about the gas system.

I can always disconnect one lp tank from the TT regulator and hook it up to the BRC right? would a 20 foot hose work ok in that case?

We don't use much gas as we camp now, usually just for frig while in transit, maybe HWH on occasion. May change if we start camping w/o power somewhere.

I started a survey regarding which came first the tap off or the regulator and so far its 3 to 0 for before the regulator.

Short answer is NO it won't work as the regulator on the Big Red needs high pressure gas and that's a low pressure port.

Long answer is: You may be able to modify it if you get a matching connector and nhose, remove the regulator, and feed the low pressure Propane direct to the Big Red.

Recommendation: Extend-a-flow if you have a trailer with luggable tanks or extend-a-stay if the tanks are permanent mount motor home type.

The "extenda" products go between the valve and the regulator pigtail. They were designed to allow you to try a bigger tank into your system to allow you to stay longer. But they allow gas to flow both ways so are a conveint way to feed high pressure appliances or even a regular low pressure unit if you use the regulator that came with it.

I was just killing time and I found another portable campfire that is low pressure so it will work with an rv's LP system. It was called campfire in a can. PS I am in no way connected to this company but I thought I would pass the info along.

Why not buy a dedicated propane bottle. If you need hoses, fittings, etc. cost of those could quickly add up to the cost of a propane bottle.
