Hot and Cold Hot Water

I'm sure anyone with a Suburban gas/electric 6 gal water heater (and other heaters too) have experienced two separate problems - the unmixec hot water comes out blazing hot, and when the water-saver shut-off valve on the shower head is turned back on the water comes out ice-cold even tho the water has been dripping while off. There has got to be a better way.

The scalding water problem is serious because our grandchild can easily be burned. The cold water problem is not as bad but it seems that solving one problem could also solve both problems.

I'm aware of the use of mixing valves but I also hear that they are expensive and problematic. I've considered cobbling together a recirculating pump and some sort of tempering tank but that seems like an expensive overkill complicated solution.

Is there an easy fix to this problem? I did find one post which suggested partially opening the heater bypass valve but there seems to be no way to adjust the thermostat(s).

  • We only run our Water Heater on electric and don't seem to have the problem with scalding hot water. We have the Oxygenics shower head with shutoff at the head which doesn't shut off the water 100% so it must keep on mixing.
  • On mine, after I get the temperature set and shut off at the shower head, it gets wicked hot again for 1-2sec on restart. Gotta aim it at the wall.
