Hot water has odor

Does anyone know the cause of smelly water - similar to rotten eggs - on the warm water side. We have a residential 110 volt hot water heater - 2014 Cedar Creek Cottage. There is no slave anode, we are on well water which is pretty mild and we also have a whole unit water filter.

In the past I drained the hot water heater , ran cold water through it and refilled it and this lasted a few weeks. We use the rig on weekends 3-4 per month.

  • I had the same problem last year on my hot water heater. I'm also on a well. I started draining the fresh water and hot water tank after every trip. I then either put a small amount of bleach in the fresh water tank or, if I use city water on my next trip, pour some bleach into the hose before I hook it up to city water. I then let it run for a few minutes before using it. Minute quantities of bleach in the water won't hurt you. And it will eliminate that awful smell (probably bacteria) in your hot water tank.
  • Check your anode. Sometimes this causes it, the corrosion and metal. We've had that problem, checked our anode rod, it was severely corroded, we replaced it and the odor went away.
