Some you win and some you lose. Keep trying. Sometimes keeping a battery at 16.0 volts for days on end has the battery withstanding 16.0 volts then it will take an amp or two for a few hours. Electrochemical reactions are screwy and don't always act predictable. You've got nothing to lose.
