I would trace your "negative" wire. Where does it go and come from? Doesn't sound right!
so there is power in the solenoid. the negative is a yellow/black wire and goes under the chassis all the way to the back, where there was other stuff installed 40 years ago. the mechanic knew it was a ground and grounded it for me, apparently so I could do exactly what I'm doing now. I stuck the ring terminal not he positive end of the starter battery, and my voltage tester lit up on the positive contact over one the solenoid. of course, its only the end of a wire attached to a positive so there would be power anyway. where do I put the tester to check if its coming out of the solenoid?
EDIT:TERMINAL TO THE LEFT(CLOSER TO DRIVER) is positive to battery, other spot is negative. since I just bought the house battery and it isn't in yet, does this mean id connect the post that is currently doing negative to the positive on the new battery?
