Not surprising - seem to recall that my E350 had a relay somewhere between the solenoid and the ignition source. In my case I quit trying to chase the wires and ran a wire though the firewall to the radio fuse - 10 minutes work cut-out hours of wire diagnostics. Worked for me.
I would replace the solenoid (not expensive) - beef up the wires to both batteries, add appropriate fuse, and run a wire through the firewall.
this is exactly what I am going to do, and gives me an excuse to fire her up and go to the store to test the heat :). ill install today, and might come back for tips. I'm guessing, disconnect the battery, disconnect solenoid, put new solenoid same spot, then I'm not sure with battery connect order, inverter etc. it should be straightforward though, one at a time and always negatives first. when I remove my battery, I disconnect negative first?
