RamTX BTDT! There is a good chance your system overcharged the battery and the resulting off gassing mix (hydrogen/oxygen (H2, O2)) found an ignition source and the rest is history. A volt/amp meter is your friend. Check your battery manufacturers charging specifications. However, it is normal for wet cell deep cycle battery(s) to off gas during heavy use either charging or discharging. Make sure your battery compartment is well ventilated and the vents are clear. Most propane (hydrocarbon) detectors will also sound an alarm in the presence of excess H2. Without seeing it, if your storage compartment has ventilation issues, it might be a good idea to install one inside the compartment.
The fact that the explosion blew your storage area compartment door open makes me think you need more ventilation area, however, a little bit of hydrogen can go a long way. Think, . . . the Hindenburg zeppelin disaster.
