A full volt drop for 1 to 5 amps seems like a lot unless the wire is unusually long and thin. Definitely need to measure direct on the battery terminals to verify the reading of the remote meter. Clamp-on DC ammeter would verify the load.
Next would be to verify full charge by using the dreaded hydrometer or let them rest disconnected 48 hours and see if they hold 12.65+ volts together.
Brand new batteries may need to break in a bit but this may not provide much improvement.
