Yep that's a standard quarter wave Omnidirectional whip antenna. It will run better with some screen of a radial grid under it. It will *work* just attached to the ground wire. It will work better with a quarter wave ground plane under it.
All that studying for the extra class ticket may not have been a waste after all lol.

Or several strip of Aluminum tape arranged in a star pattern on the roof with the antenna in the center. Thats more than any of my antennas have from the factory.. :(
