Why not just download some shows and movies onto your laptop computer in advance and then watch anytime, anywhere, no commercials?
Will work on a short trip, but for snowbird or semi-permanent camp - not so well. Episodes are short, you don't want to watch the same too often. Also, they make new episodes now and then, so you have to expand the collection all the time, make it a permanent hobby. Also, there are occasional movies that you've seen years ago, didn't bother to download, but don't mind watching it again now. Though basic sat or cable package won't run any top ranking movies more often then once a few months. Some people regularly watch their "local" - 1000 miles away - news and weather while on a long vacation, something I don't understand but this is what they do.
PVR takes care of commercials, you just click Skip button 5 times. I don't watch anything without PVR now, commercials are too irrelevant and make every show or movie half an hour longer.
