I bought the camco stainless screen that is held on with springs for my heater also. This screen came with a tool that will reach through the screen mesh and install the spring. It's just a shaft, like a small screw driver or steel wire with a slot cut into the end.
Didn't install anything at the water heater or generator, but try to remember to open them slowly.
I used fiberglass window screening for both upper and lower frig vents, AC cover, LP door louvers, and battery door louver. It's cheap and cuts with scissors.
I cleaned the area well and used high temp hot glue to install.
The silicone mentioned above may be more rugged but I didn't want a lot of trouble if I wanted to remove it.
I also screened in underneath the gas bottles on our 5thW.
I did the 5thW in 2001 and would estimate maybe 40K miles and it's all still on there. The only screen I've had to come loose was in an AC cover that I didn't clean well and under our previous 5thW when my wife decided to get a puppy.
I had to remove part of the screen under the gas bottles once to remove the cover of the black and grey tanks. Once re-installed, I only had to re-heat the glue to attach the screen again.
