Part of the trouble with hitting the bolt is that you really need support under the shaft so the blow is not just absorbed into the gear mount like a spring. Probably just need to remove it. Looks like two bolts and the pinion frame comes out. Need to do same on the other side so the entire assembly comes out as a unit. Then it will be much easier to support the shaft properly and drive the bolt out.
